Artist’s Biography : Known for his fashion photography and images of Africa, Peter Beard born in 1938 shot photographs of Africa that remain his most powerful and best known body of work. Beard’s interest in Africa can be traced to his trips in the 1950s and ’60s, which he viewed as escapes from the high society into which he was born. During the 1970s, Beard began working for fashion magazines and became a fixture at Studio 54. Later, Beard turned to collage and photo-based art, mixing the worlds of fashion, beauty, stardom, and animal rights activism.
Beard’s photographs of elephants shot in East Africa during the 1960s — in Kenya — reveal, as per the former director of the Tsavo Research Project, just how close “the ecology of the elephant is … to that of man than to any other animal.” As a kind of elephant whisperer, Beard offers up his understanding and shows us a very human mammal.
