Description

Babajide Olatunji – Tribal Marks Series IV #23

Estimated Value: $5192.62

Babajide Olatungi is a self taught contemporary, expressionist Nigerian artist.  He is mostly known for his Tribal Mark series, which are hyperrealistic series of portraits with facility scarified characters. His work represents Yoruba cultural significance and socio-cultural discuss.

Here we have one of Babajide Olatunji’s Trove of Archival photographs that offer an alternative to the often one-dimensional ways that we understand the coming of age experience of a young African woman. This is a drawing from the artist’s personal experience of living in a rural village in Nigeria as a young girl. The collage attempts to preserve and lend greater gravity to the loss of innocence in nascent adolescence with strength, and not naivety. Collaged onto indigo hand-dyed paper, which references ancient dye processes.
